So far, the year 2021 has shown a lot of promise. With vaccination numbers on the rise, gyms and studios continuing to reopen, and things getting closer to “normal,” there seems to be a lot to look forward to at Upper Hand and throughout the country heading into the spring.
Since the launch of the Helping Hands Initiative at the start of this year, we have been eager to continue this positive momentum. The Helping Hands Committee met to discuss ways we could give back to our community, even while we primarily remain working from home. As a result, we organized a team-wide donation drive as our first community engagement project of the year.
Over the past quarter, Upper Hand collected items to benefit three nonprofits: Exodus Refugee Immigration, Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis, and Indiana Diaper Bank. Each of these organizations help members of the Indianapolis area meet their basic needs. Our team was able to donate items off of each organization’s wish list asynchronously, contributing to a common goal while we are still apart.
“At Upper Hand, we believe in creating opportunities,” says Courtney Kerr, Communications Specialist at Upper Hand. “Whether contributing to a healthier, more active world through sports and fitness or sharing our resources to help others meet their basic needs, we know that even the smallest actions can bring significant change to the communities we serve.”
Exodus Refugee Immigration is dedicated to the protection of human rights by serving the resettlement needs of refugees and other displaced people fleeing persecution, injustice, and war by welcoming them to Indiana. Beyond just providing food and shelter, Exodus has created a network of support for refugee newcomers in Indianapolis. From learning the English language to finding a home and a job, Exodus is committed to helping its clients establish new lives in the United States.
Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis is a partnership of congregations and community organizations that work to eliminate homelessness in Greater Indianapolis. They help children and their families who are experiencing homelessness through providing basic needs and housing assistance through their various programming. They believe in keeping families together, and helping them succeed through difficult times because every child deserves a home.
Indiana Diaper Bank collects and distributes diapers, wipes, and other diapering needs to local homeless and domestic violence shelters, day care programs, foster care programs, children’s hospitals, and other community partners. Their purpose is to assist low-income families to meet the immediate need for diapers. Indiana Diaper Bank is also able to provide partnering organizations with a high-need resource they are not normally able to provide.
