Upper Hand Lends a “Helping Hand” to Project A.N.G.E.L.

Following a tradition started last year, the Upper Hand team lent a “helping hand” to bring joy to one family in our community this holiday season. The pandemic has affected everyone in one way or another, whether it be the loss of a loved one, job, or even gatherings and celebration. As we approach the holiday season, it’s no secret that, much like the rest of 2020, things may not feel as merry and bright. With the stress of the holidays and the added hardships of this year, it is more important than ever to spread a little extra holiday cheer.

This season, Upper Hand partnered with Project A.N.G.E.L. to bring joy to one family this Christmas. Serving our neighboring Hendricks County, Project A.N.G.E.L. provides holiday relief to local families by supplying them with food, clothes, and toys from each child’s wishlist. This is no easy task, and they rely on help from the community throughout the year to help grant these wishes. With the need in our area this holiday season up 40% from last year, Upper Hand saw this as an opportunity to lend a helping hand. Project A.N.G.E.L. gathers its resources in a variety of ways–from businesses holding fundraisers to local schools organizing food drives. Closer to the holidays, volunteers around the area have the opportunity to sponsor a child or family to fulfill the Christmas wish lists. The goal is to grant all of these wishes, because for many children, these may be the only gift they receive for Christmas that year. That’s where we came in. As soon as we received our family’s wish list, it was time for us to get to work. While our team couldn’t physically be together this year, Project A.N.G.E.L. provided the perfect opportunity for us to contribute to a common goal and give back to the community. The day after receiving our family’s wish list, every item had been spoken for; and in just two short weeks, the gifts piled up in our office, turning it into our own little workshop.

However, our journey didn’t end there. Saturday, December 12 was perhaps the biggest day for Project A.N.G.E.L.— delivery day. Beginning at 8am, cars were lined up around the building to pick up the food and gifts to deliver to the families. This year, Project ANGEL delivered toys and clothing for 400 children and boxes of food for 650 people in Hendricks County. We were fortunate enough to contribute to these numbers as well as participate in delivery day by bringing the food and gifts to our family. This year, we have had to get creative in many ways. From navigating remote work strategies to continuing to build camaraderie among our team, we have all been experimenting with new ways to stay engaged. When it came to giving back, this was no different. While many volunteering opportunities were placed on hold for the time being, the need for help has only grown. Special thanks to Amy Friddle at Project A.N.G.E.L. for working with us to coordinate everything from start to finish. From our initial conversation and family selection to coordinating the delivery to our family, Amy helped us spread joy and make this Christmas special for our community.
